Introducing our Newest Partner: The Wisdom Study

The WISDOM Study (Women Informed to Screen Depending on Measures of risk) is working to revolutionize breast cancer detection by testing a novel, personalized approach to breast screening based on each woman’s individual risk (genetics, lifestyle, health history, breast density), compared to annual mammograms- the standard of care, based on 30-year-old data.Through advances in medicine over these years we’ve learned that breast cancer isn’t just one disease, and women’s risk for developing these diseases varies. When it comes to breast screening, one size may not fit all. That’s why WISDOM is using the best tools in modern medicine and gathering evidence to determine the best, safest way to screen all women for breast cancer. A way that identifies the most aggressive cancers, and reduces false alarms, unnecessary procedures and the stresses that come with these experiences.

A Note from Dr. Laura Esserman

During the past 30 years, most women in the United States have been recommended to have a mammogram every year. We know that mammograms are vital for breast cancer detection, but we still don’t know how often we need them.

Over those same 30 years we have learned so much about the biology of the breast. We now know that women have different levels of risk for breast cancer, and that it is not simply one disease. Despite these advances, breast cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer death for women in the US. If we can learn more about who gets breast cancer, why they get it, and what type they get, we can reduce women’s risk of getting it. That’s why I founded the WISDOM Study – Women Informed to Screen Depending OMeasures of risk.

The groundbreaking WISDOM Study is testing a personalized approach to screening compared to annual mammograms. Please join us and make medical history. Use the WISDOM of your body to help yourself, us, and generations of women to come.

Finding solutions to inequalities in breast health

Despite medical advances, over 40,000 women die of breast cancer each year. Women of color have disproportionately higher rates of the most aggressive, fatal breast cancers than other women. It is the number-one killer of Hispanic women and the number-two killer of African American women. We know that Black women are inflicted by more aggressive cancers and have higher fatality rates than others, and we are working to change that.

Diversity and inclusion are pillars of our study –represented in our research team, study staff and participant pool. It is only through participation of diverse people that researchers can identify who gets what type of cancers and then build solutions such as improved risk analysis and prevention tools tailored to diverse groups. Reducing health disparities is part of our mission, so that someday all women can live longer, healthier lives.

Managing breast health during COVID: screen smarter with WISDOM

Breast screening rates have declined over the past year due to the significant impact of COVID-19 on our lives and well-being. Our goal is to help promote breast health and a safe return to breast screening. We want women to feel comfortable returning to their preventive care after COVID and want to ensure those at highest risk of breast cancer get the care they need. By joining WISDOM, women can learn about their individual risk and the best screening plan for themselves. This will not only help their own health but will enable scientists to develop new strategies for generations of women to come.
